Hidden words & compounds

Fair Quest-style word hunting.

← All countdown tips

Some VR questions hide a smaller word inside a bigger one, or across the join of two separate words. Others ask you to build a real compound word by joining two given words together. Both rely on reading letter-by-letter rather than by whole-word shape.

Picture it: a word hidden inside CARPET

CARPET

Letters 1–3, read in order, spell CAR — a real word hiding in plain sight inside a longer one.

CARPET

The same word also hides PET in letters 4–6. Always read left to right, checking every possible run of letters.

Remember — the method

  1. Ignore the shape of the whole word — read it as a plain string of letters.
  2. Slide a “window” of 3, 4, then 5 letters along, checking if each run spells a real word.
  3. For two given words, also check the join: the end of the first + the start of the second.
  4. For compounds, test each pairing both ways round — order matters (SUNFLOWER, not FLOWERSUN).

Exam trap

Stopping at the first short word you spot instead of checking whether a longer, more exact hidden word also fits the clue.

✗ THE (too short, not the clue)

THEATRE

✓ HEAT (matches “means warmth”)

THEATRE

Question patterns you might see

Same reading skill, from a single hidden word to matching real compounds.

  1. 1 · Simple — Hidden word inside one word

CARPET hides CAR (letters 1–3) and PET (letters 4–6).

  2. 2 · Simple — Build a compound word

From SUN FLOWER RAIN COAT, join the correct pairs: SUNFLOWER and RAINCOAT.

  3. 3 · Medium — Hidden word across a join

BUS + KIT: the last letter of BUS (S) plus all of KIT spells SKIT — a real word spanning the two words.

  4. 4 · Medium — Hidden word matching a clue

SCARE hides a 3-letter word meaning “a vehicle” — reading letters 2–4 spells CAR.

  5. 5 · Trickier — Pick the longer, more exact word

THEATRE hides THE (too short to match a clue about warmth), EAT, and HEAT — the 4-letter word that actually means warmth is the intended answer.

  6. 6 · Trickiest — Eliminate the fake compounds

From DOOR BELL FOOT BALL, the real compounds are DOORBELL and FOOTBALL BELLFOOT and BALLDOOR sound plausible but are not real words.

Coach tip: cover the rest of the word with a finger and reveal it letter by letter — it stops your eye jumping to the answer that “looks right”.
