Synonyms that aren’t antonyms
Vocab piles that look hard — until you spot the odd one out.
← All countdown tipsA synonym means nearly the same. An antonym means the opposite. 11+ piles often mix both, plus a related word that is neither. Name the job first: same, opposite, or odd one out — then pick.
Picture it: three kinds of neighbour
glad — synonym (same mood)
miserable — antonym (opposite mood)
hungry — related to feeling, not to happy
Remember — the method
- Read the question stem twice: closest meaning, opposite, or odd one out?
- Put the target word in a short sentence of your own.
- Try each option in that sentence. Same job = synonym. Reverse job = antonym.
- If it is merely “in the same topic”, it is the distractor.
Exam trap
Picking a word from the same topic that is not actually opposite. Hot and warm are not antonyms — they sit on the same side of the scale. The opposite of hot is cold.
Intensity ladder — not opposites
Warm sits on the same side as hot. The antonym of hot is cold.
Question patterns you might see
Same / opposite / odd one — don’t mix the jobs.
1 · Simple — Closest meaning
“Which word is closest in meaning to BEGIN?”
finishstartpausemiddlestart — same job as begin
2 · Simple — Opposite
Opposite of generous is mean (stingy), not rich — rich is about money, not about giving.
Giving scale
mean↔generousMoney topic (trap)
poorrichSame topic (money) ≠ opposite meaning (giving vs keeping)
3 · Medium — Odd one out in a synonym pile
tinysmalllittlehugeThree mean “not big”. Huge is the antonym sitting in a synonym list.
4 · Medium — Intensity, not opposite
Shout is not always the opposite of whisper — sometimes both are “ways of speaking” and the odd one is listen. Check whether the question wants opposite meaning or a different job.
Volume ladder (same job)
whispertalkshoutwhispershouttalklistenWhisper / talk / shout sit on one volume scale. Listen is receiving, not speaking — that is the odd job.
5 · Trickier — Near-miss synonym
“Closest to ANCIENT: old, antique, elderly, historic.”
- 1Ancient usually means very old (buildings, times, objects).
- 2Elderly is for people — related, wrong partner.
- 3Old is closest for a general 11+ stem; antique/historic can be too narrow unless the sentence is about objects or events.
oldantiqueelderlyhistoric6 · Trickiest — Prefix opposites that fail
In- and un- often make opposites (visible / invisible) but flammable / inflammable mean the same. Don’t trust the prefix — test the meaning in a sentence.
visible → invisible
prefix really reverses it
flammable ≈ inflammable
prefix does not reverse it
Coach tip: if two options both “feel close”, pick the one you could swap into the sentence without changing the plot.
